“What does our motto mean for the aftermarket in more detail? Simple: we’re committed to ‘Thinking in Reliability. Responsible Thinking. Thinking in Services.’ For us at
Knorr-Bremse these three guiding principles sum up what we mean by service – a holistic approach that takes account of the needs of our customers in all their different aspects and responds with matching products and services,” says Alexander Wagner, Vice President Sales & Marketing Aftermarket at
Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH.

Focus on reliability and quality

This year, for the first time Knorr-Bremse is starting volume production of a mechatronic component featuring a modular service concept. As a result, in the electronically controlled Air Treatment System EAC 2.1 there is no longer any need to replace parts which are not defective. This makes for low-cost repairs and better availability of replacement parts. Knorr-Bremse offers separate repair modules for the air dryer including the electronics, for the multi-circuit protection valve, and for the air dryer cartridge.

Two other Knorr-Bremse products that have entered series production in recent months and will be reaching distributors and workshops in relatively large numbers in the next few years are the trailer disc brake ST7, which is the lightest of its kind. The new pad design brings an increase not only in service life but also in ease of maintenance. Visitors to the company’s booth at Automechanika can get to grips with the new calipers, carriers, pads, and various repair kits for the two-piston disc brake. The second Knorr-Bremse product that is now also being built in large numbers is the Trailer EBS Generation 2.2 Premium with integrated air suspension leveling function. With its numerous integrated and standardized additional functionalities, this new module renders many pneumatic components redundant, which again makes for easier maintenance.

Service over the full product lifecycle

Knorr-Bremse is pursuing similar goals with the expansion of its Genuine Remanufacturing portfolio. This comprises products which have been remanufactured when their initial service life came to an end. Following expert reconditioning, they re-enter service with the same quality promise as their new counterparts. Only their anticipated service life is some-what shorter. Products recently added to the remanufacturing portfolio include the Oil Separator Cartridge (OSC) and another mechatronic component, the EBS2 Trailer Control Module. “With our Genuine Remanufacturing strategy we make a substantial contribution to resource conservation,” says Dr. Daniel C. F. Köhler, who is in charge of the remanufacturing program at Knorr-Bremse. “At the same time, as the average age of fleets continues to rise, we offer cost-effective repair solutions in line with the residual value of the vehicles.”

“We are aiming to offer our customers a broad portfolio of remanufactured products that responds to the various market needs,” comments Dr. Stephan Weng, Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH, explaining the business model. “We are currently conducting the necessary final feasibility studies at component level for the majority of our portfolio. The full range of parts that we aim to be remanufacturing by 2018 will probably comprise 30 to 40 different product groups. Our remanufactured parts offer genuine original parts quality.

That means that the assembly lines and end-of-line testing for our remanufactured products are identical to those we use for our OE parts production. The systematic remanufacturing of parts prevents valuable raw materials being wasted. Another aspect is that owners of older vehicles are looking for precisely the kind of repairs that we can offer with our remanufacturing program. This is one way we pursue our guiding principles of ‘Thinking in Reliability. Responsible Thinking. Thinking in Services’, demonstrating reliability towards our customers and responsibility towards the environment.”

Test options at the booth

One remarkably simple means of checking the actuator interface is the new actuator maintenance gauge – the outcome of a benchmark study that
Knorr-Bremse regularly conducts to improve its aftermarket service concepts. Simply hold the gauge alongside to check for example the pushrod height or the seal overlap with ease. The new gauge can be tried out at the Knorr-Bremse booth, which also features a truck driving simulator from the Group’s Australian subsidiary Sydac. The experts from Sydac generally focus on simulators for train drivers, but are now offering a simulator for truck drivers, too. So anyone who wants to test their abilities in hazardous on-road situations without putting their health at risk can do so at the Knorr-Bremse booth.
